Testing the Waters // Skincare

When you need to overhaul your skincare routine sometimes the best thing to do is test the waters and try some new things

So I touched on the changes my skin has gone through recently in my previous post Finding a Diamond in the Rough I also mentioned how I am trying to get through some of the hoards of products I have in my dresser before committing to buy anything new.

Skincare, or at least good skincare in my experience, doesn't tend to be cheap, but I feel like it is definitely worth the investment if you find the right products. But that is where the problem lies, finding the right products for you without spending a small fortune in the process.

Before my skin changed I used a regular combination of products that I didn’t really change up. They worked for my skin type and I was comfortable with them but I was never really completely satisfied with how they made my skin feel.

You can have the worlds most amazing makeup products and be a phenomenal artist, but your results won't reflect this if your canvas isn’t well looked after. Your skincare should be the foundation of your routine and getting that right can take patience and a lot of trial and error.

Trial and error is something I am now embracing. Very few people, myself included, have the money to completely overhaul the products they are using in one go. I am lucky enough to work in the industry and over the years of gifts, perks, sample subscriptions and just plain hoarding I have accumulated quite a vast range of different products. So rather than buying anything right now, I am truly ‘shopping my stash’

Here is what I’m using right now.

Cleanse

Micellar Water has been a go to initial cleanse in my routine for a good 2 years now and I don’t think this is going to change anytime soon. I always remove as much makeup as I can before cleansing properly and find this is the easiest way to do so. My normal choice is the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water however, I am currently trying Shiseido’s Pureness Refreshing Cleansing Water. Now the price difference between the 2 is quite substantial and although Shiseido’s is a great product I think my skin is now just too dry for it. Their Pureness range is targeted towards a younger skin type that is more commonly a bit oily, because of this I think I will go back to my trusty Garnier once I run out.

To double cleanse I have always preferred oil-based cleansers. Years ago I tried the La Mer Cleansing Oil and although I wouldn’t repurchase as I don’t think it is worth the £70 price point, it did make me fall in love with oils. I always thought being oily would write off these formulas but they have always worked best for me, and I am finding the same results even now I am dryer. I am currently running out of my BareMinerals Oil Obsessed and will definitely repurchase as I love it, but I also want to try more of a balm cleanse pretty soon.

Moisturise

This has been the biggest change up for me. My go to since it launched had been BareMinerals True Oasis. Its gel consistency was perfect for me and never felt too heavy, but now it just isn’t cutting it. I am alternating right now between a couple of samples but mainly using BareMinerals Bare Haven, which is a lightweight cream. Although I think there is something out there that will be better suited to me so I think the hunt is still on.

Eyes

I feel like eye creams are where most people slack in their skincare, and I am no exception. I have never really worked one into my routine religiously but when I do use one I notice a huge difference. I get rather creased under the eyes so the extra hydration gives a bit of a plump which helps and right now my eyes are insanely dry, to the point of being sore. At the moment I am using Shiseido Bio-Performance Glow Revival Eye Cream which works well for me of a night but is a little too heavy for during the day.

Masks

I love a face mask, who doesn’t, but it’s a product I have never been loyal too. There are so many on the market all offering different benefits and because it still feels like more of a treat I like to change it up. I am loving Shiseido Purifying Mask and use it when I get time for a relaxing bath, these are few and far between now so I try to tie it in with a hair wash once or twice a week. Although it is working great for me I really want to dip my toes in the GlamGlow waters soon, I could do with a heavy duty blackhead clearing mask right now.

You may notice a few products missing here. My current exfoliating product is discontinued so not much point in mentioning it and although I love it I need to find something else before I run out. Something else I need to add back into my routine is a good serum.

There are a few brands I really want to try. The Ordinary is at the top of my list and I am so intrigued by the Korean skincare market and what it has to offer. I am taking this change in my skin as an opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and have fun trying some new products.

Do you have any skincare products you swear by and think I should give a go?
